Follonica on the Maremma coast
Follonica - is a modern Italian resort on the Maremma coast with a similarly named gulf (gulf of Follonica). The classy and chic yacht harbour, Punta Ala, and the industrial and harbour city of Piombino, bound the gulf in the south and north. The island of Elba is directly opposite Follonica and is clearly visible in good weather. Large pine forests, from where you can see the beautifully forested hills of the Alta Maremma, picturesquely surround the gulf of Follonica that is reaching inland.
Follonica owes its prominence mainly to the iron foundry ILVA that was located there in the 19th century. At that time, Tuscany’s ruling grand dukes even built ironworks. Their administration is still in Follonica, even though the pits “Colline Metallifere” in the interior were closed down some time ago. Nevertheless, some of the buildings still hark back to the old times, for example the parish church with its massive cast-iron portal. Some years ago, original relics of the Etruscan settlements were discovered in Follonica’s interior, which proves that the history of Follonica must be considerably older. Today iron ore is no longer produced there anymore. Follonica predominantly exists because of its tourism which began in the mid-20th-century and which is becoming more popular every year due to its beautiful beaches and glorious surroundings. Follonica is a modern and young city, definitely not as classy as Punta Ala for example, but with a wide range of entertainment and superb shopping facilities. The modern hotels and the long sandy beaches attract people of all ages to the city.
Follonica offers the ideal requirements for all types of water sports on the sea front and along the jetty, you will find both public swimming pools and beaches. Follonica’s beach is gently sloping and therefore perfect for infants. The southern part of the beach is the more unique and comfortable one, because of the original fishing lodges.
You can find some of the most beautiful public beaches in the south and north of Follonica. The Cala Violina, about 4 kilometres south of Follonica, is undoubtedly the most beautiful bay in the whole of Italy, which means that unfortunately, the bay is extremely overcrowded in the summer months.
You can reach this gorgeous natural bay either by foot (about 4 kilometres along a somewhat steep forest road), or by bicycle, or by bus (irregular departures from the harbour basin in Scarlino, about 3 kilometres from Follonica). North of Follonica, at Torre Mozza and Carbonifera you will find long, beautiful, sandy beaches, whose charm is somewhat spoilt by the industrial plants of Piombino that are clearly visible,
Some recommended restaurants:
Da Maurizio (a typical first-class southern Italian fish restaurant directly on the sea front)
Il Cacciatore (offering most fish dishes)
The weekly market takes place every Friday at the railway station.
Apart from that, there is the Mercato Coperto, Piazza XXV Maggio, which opens daily.
