Museo dell’Opera del Duomo
Eminent art works (invaluable reliquary caskets, medieval handwritings etc.) from all the churches in Pisa are displayed in the 23 halls of the Dominican cloister. In addition to stolen Islamic art treasures, the collection’s focus concentrates on the ornaments, on the facades, original sculptures and friezes of the cathedral and also on the cathedral’s treasure, which includes Giovanni Pisano’s ivory Madonna.

Museo dell Sinopie
The museum dell Sinopie is contained in the former hospice of the cloister Santa Chiara. The museum is familiar for its well-worn frescoes and especially for the biggest collection of mural art (original-sized sketch of the frescoes with red chalk) from the 14th and 15th century. Here, you can see works from the Composanto Vecchio, including frescoes of Gozzoli and Buffalmucco.

Museo Nazionale di San Matteo
Strangely, this fabulous collection of medieval ceramics, Tuscan painting and statuary from the 12th – 15th century with original sculptures of Nicole and Giovanni Pisano, mostly escapes the tourits’ notice. In addition to the impressively painted medieval table crosses, the gem of the painting collection is the apostle Paulus of Masaccio. It is a part of an altarpiece that was sawn into pieces in the 18th century, the other parts being dispersed across the world (Malibu, London, Naples and Berlin).
