Museums in Siena
Museo Civico
The Palazzo Pubblico contains some of the most significant art works of the Middle Ages. Siena’s greatest painters were assigned, for the town hall’s construction in 1297, to paint frescoes on the internal wall. In the large council hall, the Sala del Mappamondo (hall of the world map) frescoes of Simone Martini can be seen along with an illustration of Madonna in the midst of angels and a portrait of a horseman at the siege of Castle Montemassi.
Ambrogio Lorenzetti’s three-piece fresco cycle in the Sala della Pace (a metaphor for bad government, a metaphor for good government and a metaphor of the consequences for city) reminds the town hall councillors of their morals and abiding by the law.
