Castiglione della Pescaia in Tuscany

The lively fishing village Castiglione della Pescaia is one of the most beautiful original harbour locations in the Alta Maremma. The river Bruna connects the countryside with the sea and terminates picturesquely in a wide lagoon like opening to the sea. Over the years, Castiglione della Pescaia has developed into a popular and well-kept resort that has not lost its fishing village characteristics. In the harbour, you can find tourist boats and local fishing boats side by side, and if you wander around the harbour in the evening, you can buy freshly caught fish from the fish market. Castiglione offers, of course, a wide variety of restaurants, bars and shops. Tourists can join the swirling throngs of people along the beach promenade and in the pedestrian area, which in summer is especially lively, while the calm and broad sandy beaches south of the harbour-channels offer peace and relaxation.

Castiglione della Pescaia also has a very beautiful and well-preserved town-centre, which retains the town’s original flair even in the summer.
Having ascended the somewhat steep, paved street to the Rocca Aragonese, on which the medieval castle towers over the town, you are in an entirely different world, though still only a couple of minutes from the town centre. Here, one is surrounded by medieval buildings, which are now privately owned and secluded, snug wine bars and small boutiques, partly, are accommodated within. The well-preserved castle with its stunning towers is a fortress of Pisa from the 14th century and is privately owned, too. Here you have a stunning view over the town and out to the sea.

Ferries and round trip boats put out to sea regularly from the harbour to the nearby islands (Giglio, Montecristo and Monte Argentario). Such a trip certainly is highly recommended.

Some of the beautiful and good quality restaurants in Castiglione della Pescaia are:
Il Faggiano (good quality and reasonably priced fish restaurant)
Il Pescatore (rather expensive, first-class fish restaurant)
La Scaletta (a terraced garden located in the old town)
Pizzeria Faro (best pizza in town)

The weekly market is held every Saturday in the large car park at the Brunadelta (unfortunately for car owners who lose about 200 parking spots)!

Near Castiglione della Pescaia you can find the Maremma’s most beautiful beaches. For example the Pineta del Tombolo, with its huge ancient pine trees, connects the two resorts Castiglione della Pescaia and Marina die Grosseto and borders a miles long sandy beach, which is also perfect in autumn and winter for beach wanderers.
